Hobby or Life-Style Change

As you start to go deeper into your practice, you may have a LOVE / HATE relationship with Ashtanga Yoga because of its repetitiveness. If that is the case then, you are only seeing it as a hobby, a way to get fit or a quick fix to get strong or flexible. You are not looking at yoga as a change in lifestyle.

Ashtanga yoga is a spiritual and mental practice, a practice that is more on devotion rather than the physical fitness approach of yoga. Though you will still get the physical results by doing it regularly such as stamina and flexibility, and building strength. The key to for practicing Ashtanga Yoga in a longer lifetime is that you enjoy it and you have a pleasant experience with it.

Ashtanga Yoga is an Inside-Out practice

Don’t let the physicality of this practice fool you. What you can’t see, what’s going on inside is more important. Breathing, bandhas, thoughts, emotions, internal cleansing.

The physicality is there to heat the body up for the removal of toxins and to keep our body healthy and fit. This practice is not about being able to jump lightly to chaturanga or float up into headstand (although those things will come with consistent practice). The true benefit of yoga is cleansing your mind and finding peace within you.

Don’t Push. Let the Yoga come to you!

Do your practice consistently and the lightness and the flexibility the binds, the inversions, etc. will come to you. Slip into your yoga like a comfortable pair of jeans.
