Working with negative emotions in NeuroDynamic Breathwork

What an incredible experience. A deep connection with myself and release of repressed emotions. It was amazing!

We tend to repress and/or suppress our difficult emotions, sometimes due to past trauma and sometimes our inability to deal with our emotions.

We consciously avoid suppressed emotions, which could be a good short-term solution due to life circumstances.

But a bad solution if we never return to address them.

Repressed emotions often relate to childhood experiences that meant the emotions didn't get a chance to be processed at the time.

But that doesn't mean they disappear. Instead, they might show up as psychological or physical symptoms.

Any emotion that is either repressed or suppressed may show up for processing in your Breathwork.

Many people have experienced difficult emotions in NeuroDynamic Breathwork and have strong emotional releases with sadness, frustration, anxiety and anger.

Once this release happens, you can feel a sense of relief, relaxation and a lighter sense of being carried forward into your life.

How to deal with these experiences?

There are two ways to deal with these types of experiences in NeuroDynamic Breathwork - intensification and integration.

Intensifying the emotion while breathing

It is a common saying that the way past is through when it comes to experiences on your breathwork journey.

Thus, the best course of action is to intensify your emotions through movement, sound and expression.

Shout, scream, cry, laugh, punch pillows and move your body as much as you can in tune with your emotional experience.

Whatever emotion you are feeling, express it until it feels complete.

You may feel tired or even exhausted after the session when you release your emotions during your Breathwork.

So it's important to show yourself lots of love and compassion and know that you've done your body and mind a huge favour by letting the emotions go.

Depending on the amount of repression/suppression, you may be releasing emotions in subsequent sessions however every release will help you feel lighter and more complete.

Integration

In NeuroDynamic Breathwork, integration is the process we do after our Breathwork to help our psyche fully absorb our experiences.

Writing the details of your breathwork journey down in a journal allows you to refer back to the experience if any insight comes up for you later on.

Write down how you experienced the journey in simple terms, what happened, how did it feel in your body so you can bring it to mind afterwards.

You can also bring in time to reflect on your experience through Yoga, walking in nature or meditation.

Your Breathwork experience isn't over at the end of the musical journey; to get the maximum benefit from your breathwork experience, it's important to set aside time for integration.

Ultimately, emotions aren't in themselves positive or negative.

They are just expressions of energy (Energy in Motion) that we need to release and move through.

Through Breathwork and emotional release, we can learn how to move through our emotions more easily.

Emotional freedom means that we have the freedom to express our emotions healthily - much the similar way that children can - we can be happy when we are happy and sad when we are sad.

And pass through our emotions quickly without getting stuck or trying to chase or hold onto pleasant experiences.

Resulting in feeling more connected to our present moment experience and a more profound sense of being.
